Centris lanipes Fabricius

Centris lanipes (Fabricius)   

 – nests in dead wood (vs others which are ground nesters)

 – Coelioxys abdominalis is its nest parasite

Centris subgenus Heterocentris (The bees of the world by Michener 2007)

• Marginal cell shorter than distance from its apex to wing tip
• Whip like setae arising behind summit of eye absent, or if present, then reaching only to anterior margin of scutum.
• Medium sized, to very robust
• Scutellum rounded without lobes, tubercles or separate convexities
• Maxillary palpus 3 or 4 segmented (counting robust basal segment, i.e. with two or three free segments);
• hind femur and tibia of male usually swollen
• hind basitarsus of male usually with spine or elevated carina on posterior margin
• male labrum broader than long with spars or abundance hairs on whole surface
• female basitibial plate simple, without secondary plate or with tendency to form secondary plate covered with short, dense hairs.

• Smallest centris 10-12mm
• The head and thorax are black with beige colored hair(except some yellow marks on the face)
